Luis Enrique breaks silence on Chelsea v PSG brawl after Club World Cup final

Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique has explained how he tried to calm the situation down in the heated full-time scenes after the FIFA Club World Cup final defeat to Chelsea, despite appearing to put his hand in the face of goalscorer Joao Pedro.

The Blueswere crowned world champions with a 3-0 victory over PSG in the Club World Cup final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday night.

Cole Palmer scored two goals before summer signing Pedro got a third for Chelsea to secure the victory in the United States.

After the final whistle, players and staff from both Chelsea and PSG were involved in a mass confrontation, which also saw Enrique clash with Pedro.

Enrique was joined by Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca in the heated exchange as members of staff and players from both clubs attempted to stop the incident.

Enrique spoke to reporters after the game where he was asked about the tensions between both Chelsea and PSG that boiled over after the full-time whistle in East Rutherford.

“I have no problem expressing my feelings at the end of the game in a high level of pressure," Enrique told reporters on Sunday. "It’s very stressful for all of us. It's going to be impossible to avoid that.

“Everybody was involved. It was not what was best and this was just the end result of the pressure of the match.

“I have seen [Enzo] Maresca," Enrique later added. "I saw he had pushed others and we had to separate all the players and I do not know where that pressure came from.

“But I think this is a situation we must all avoid, that goes without saying. My intention was clear, I want separate the players so the situation didn’t become worse.”
