Addressing the country from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a big gift to the citizens this Diwali (GST reform). The Prime Minister said, "This Diwali I am going to give you a big gift ... We are bringing the next generation GST reform. This will reduce the tax burden and make the tax process easier."

In such a situation, people want to know what kind of reform and change PM Modi is talking about in GST. So let's understand from the experts what all is going to change by Diwali (what will become cheaper).

Vivek Jalan, partner of Tax Connect Advisory Services LLP, said that the GST Council meeting has not taken place for the last eight months. The reason behind this is that the big work of rate rationalization is going on. A group of ministers (GoM) is working on this and is considering all the suggestions of industry organizations.

What can become cheaper by Diwali?

According to experts, this Diwali, many items for the common consumer can be bought in the lower GST slab of 5%. This can include FMCG products with small packets (sachets) priced at Rs 10 or less. In this, biscuits- namkeen, chips, chocolates, etc. are available in packets of Rs 10.

From a social point of view, the current 18% GST on autism centers is likely to be reduced to 5% so that services for children suffering from autism can be made affordable. This was also discussed in Parliament in March 2025.

Apart from this, modern age items like drones are now being widely used in war as well. The GST rate on this can be reduced to 5%. There is also a proposal to reduce the current 28% GST on parts of lithium-ion batteries of electric vehicles to 18%, so that the 'inverted duty structure' and inefficiencies of the GST system can be removed.
