Chromebooks, i.e., laptops that run on Google's ChromeOS, have been on the market for the last decade. Earlier they were known only for internet browsing, but now they have become a great option for personal and business use, although they have a certain "end of support" time, that is, after a time they do not get security and feature updates, yet they are popular among schools, businesses and people less familiar with technology due to their simplicity and ease of use, but in the last 10 years, many misconceptions have also been formed about Chromebooks, such as they cannot be used offline or they are very weak, although there have been many improvements in them over time. Let's know about 8 such major misconceptions...
1. Chromebooks are weak
Initially, when Chromebooks were made only for web browsing, this was true to some extent, but now Google has made ChromeOS more functional, and the manufacturing companies have also improved their performance. Today, Chromebooks are available in the range of Rs 20,000 to Rs 1 lakh+, and their functionality is according to the price. In low-cost Chromebooks, you can easily do tasks like streaming, using Android apps, and cloud gaming.
2. Chromebooks only run Google Chrome
On hearing the name ChromeOS, the Chrome browser comes to mind, but you can also run other browsers like Brave and Firefox. These can be installed from the Google Play Store, and they work well in tablet mode.
3. Chromebooks are not secure
The reality is that Chromebooks have many layers of security. These include automatic updates, sandboxing, and security-based design. According to CVE Details, only 50 security flaws have been found in ChromeOS since 2010, while about 3,000 vulnerabilities were found in Windows 10 between 2013 and 2023.
4. Chromebooks don't work offline
This notion is completely wrong. Now you can take notes on a Chromebook, play movies and music, read emails, and create or edit documents using Google Docs, all without an internet connection.
5. Chromebooks can't play games
This was true before, but now Chromebooks can run Android games from the Google Play Store (like Roblox, Apex Legends Mobile), Steam, GeForce Now, Amazon Luna, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Google has also launched Chromebooks specifically for gaming (like the Acer Chromebook 516 GE).
6. Chromebooks are useless for photo and video editing
If you're not doing professional editing, features like Adobe's Android apps, LumaFusion, and Google Photos' new video editor are enough on Chromebooks. It's enough for creating family videos or albums, but Windows or Macs are better for pro-level editing.
7. Chromebooks can't run Microsoft Office
The truth is that you can run Microsoft Office 365's PWAs (Progressive Web Apps) on Chromebooks. These apps work offline, can send notifications, and offer almost the same experience as the web version of Office, though power users won't get some of the features of desktop Office.
8. Chromebooks can't run Windows
This is half true. You can't install Windows on a Chromebook, but you can run it via remote access. With the help of tools like Parallels for Chrome and Chrome Remote Desktop, you can connect a Windows or Mac to a Chromebook.
