In a move aimed at accelerating the hunt for those behind the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, Anantnag Police announced on Wednesday a cash reward of Rs 20 lakh for any credible information leading to the neutralisation of the terrorists involved.
The attack, which took place on Tuesday, claimed the lives of 26 people and left 20 others injured, drawing widespread condemnation across the country.
The announcement comes as the government intensifies efforts to respond to the attack.
PM Modi chaired a high-level Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting on Wednesday, joined by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and Home Minister Amit Shah. The meeting focused on the current security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and discussed potential countermeasures.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high across Jammu and Kashmir following a string of security incidents in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack.
On Wednesday, two terrorists were gunned down as the Indian Army foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Baramulla district. According to the Army’s Chinar Corps, a group of two to three unidentified terrorists attempted to infiltrate through the Uri Nala area in north Kashmir's Sarjeevan sector.
The attempted infiltration came less than 24 hours after the Pahalgam attack and just hours before a gunfight broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Tangmarg area of Kulgam district.
Acting on intelligence inputs, security personnel launched a cordon and search operation, which led to an encounter when terrorists opened fire. No casualties have been reported in the Kulgam gunfight so far, and operations are ongoing.
