Every year, the arrival of Ganesh Chaturthi fills homes and streets across India with chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya!” Colourful pandals, decorated idols, sweet offerings, and joyous processions all come together to mark the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity revered as the remover of obstacles, the giver of wisdom, and the harbinger of prosperity.

In 2025, Ganesh Chaturthi promises to be just as grand, drawing millions of devotees into celebration.

When is Ganesh Chaturthi 2025?

According to Drik Panchang, Ganesh Chaturthi in 2025 will be observed on Wednesday, 27 August. The Chaturthi Tithi begins at 1:54 PM on 26 August and ends at 3:44 PM on 27 August.

The celebrations will culminate with Ganesh Visarjan on Saturday, 6 September 2025, when devotees bid farewell to Lord Ganesha by immersing idols in water bodies, symbolising the cycle of creation and dissolution.

Shubh Muhurat for Ganesh Puja

The most auspicious time for Ganesh Chaturthi puja falls during Madhyahna, as it is believed that Lord Ganesha was born in the afternoon.

Madhyahna Puja Muhurat: 11:05 AM to 1:40 PM (duration: 2 hours 34 minutes).

Devotees are also advised to avoid moon sighting on:
  • 26 August: 1:54 PM to 8:29 PM
  • 27 August: 9:28 AM to 8:57 PM
Tradition holds that seeing the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi may invite false accusations, a belief rooted in mythological stories about Ganesha and the moon god.

How Ganesh Chaturthi is Celebrated

The festival begins with the installation of Ganesha idols in homes and elaborately decorated public pandals. Devotees perform daily pujas, offer sweets like modak (considered Ganesha’s favourite), and sing devotional hymns.

In states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Goa, the celebrations reach their peak, with massive processions, cultural performances, and community feasts. In Mumbai and Pune, towering idols are installed in iconic pandals like Lalbaugcha Raja, drawing huge crowds.

The final day, Anant Chaturdashi, is marked by the spectacular Ganesh Visarjan, where idols are carried in grand processions, accompanied by drums, dancing, and chants. The immersion represents Ganesha’s return to Mount Kailash, symbolising detachment and the impermanence of life.

Why Ganesh Chaturthi Matters

Ganesh Chaturthi is more than just a religious occasion, it is a celebration of faith, culture, and community spirit. For families, it is a time of devotion and togetherness; for communities, it is a chance to unite in shared joy.

In 2025, as devotees welcome Lord Ganesha into their homes and hearts, the festival will once again remind us that with faith, wisdom, and perseverance, every obstacle can be removed and every new beginning embraced.
