5 key reasons colon cancer: In our body, after the stomach, there is a small intestine in the lower part, in which food is digested. After this, there is a large intestine where nutrients are extracted from the food, and waste material is pushed out. This large intestine is called the colon, and the part after it is called the rectum. Nowadays, cases of colorectal cancer are increasing among the youth. That is, cancer that occurs in the lowest part of the stomach, colon, and rectum is called colorectal cancer. It is usually called colon cancer. Earlier, this disease used to occur only after the age of 50, but nowadays, young people of 20-25 years have started getting this disease. This disease slowly enters the body and then suddenly causes a surge. In such a situation, the question is why colon cancer occurs in young people. 5 major causes of colon cancer

1. Unhealthy diet and obesity- According to a TOI report, in modern lifestyles, especially in urban and westernized societies, the amount of ultra-processed foods, red meat, sugar, and unhealthy fats in the food is high, while the amount of fiber is very low. Fiber is very important for us, as it smoothens the intestine. But today's youth is ignoring fiber by eating fast food, pizza, burgers, momos, etc. These eating habits are now directly linked to the increased risk of colon cancer. Apart from this, obesity and diabetes are becoming common in today's youth, which play an important role in increasing the risk of inflammation and cancer in the large intestine.
2. Intestinal microbiome and bacterial toxins- A new study has identified a bacterial toxin, colibactin, which is produced by some species of E. coli. This bacterium can directly damage DNA. This is where colon cancer begins. Studies have found that colibactin-related mutations are more common in younger patients, especially if the effect is felt in childhood. The main reason for this is an unhealthy diet, excessive use of antibiotics, or intestinal imbalance due to pollution, which can further increase this risk.
3. Bad environment- One of the major causes of colon cancer is also a bad environment. Nowadays, pollution is increasing everywhere. Especially in big cities. Apart from this, microplastics produce hormone-disrupting chemicals. At the same time, air pollution and other environmental chemicals can increase the rate of cancer by affecting hormones and metabolism. These chemicals can harm intestinal health in the early stages of life.
4. Sedentary lifestyle- Today's youth remain seated most of the time. They confine themselves to mobile phones all day. Outdoor activities have reduced. Even children participate less in sports that require physical activities. Screen time is the biggest enemy for this. This physical inactivity, combined with poor diet, increases the risk of many chronic diseases, including cancer.
5. Awareness later- Even if the youth have some problems, they become aware later. Initially, they do not pay attention to it. Symptoms such as constipation, stomach problems, blood in stool, unexplained fatigue, or frequent changes in bowel habits are often ignored or misdiagnosed. Due to this, the disease is not identified in the beginning. If colon cancer occurs due to this, it becomes dangerous, whereas early identification makes its treatment easier.
How to avoid colon cancer
1. Start screening early: If you are above 45 years of age, then definitely get tested for colorectal cancer. If someone in the family has had this disease or you see any symptoms, then get tested even earlier.
2. Take a complete diet rich in fiber: Include fruits, green vegetables, whole grains, and pulses in your daily diet. Reduce the consumption of red meat, sugar, and highly processed foods.
3. Keep your gut microbiome healthy: Eat foods rich in probiotics and prebiotics like yogurt, kefir, bananas, garlic, and oats. Avoid using antibiotics unnecessarily.
4. Be physically active: Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. This will keep your metabolism healthy and control inflammation.
5. Know the early signs: Don't ignore early symptoms, such as blood in stool, abdominal pain or a change in bowel habits over a long period of time.
6. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption: Both of these are responsible for many types of cancer, including colorectal cancer, even in young people.
