Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap recently revealed in an interview that he had no fund to afford his daughter Aaliyah Kahyap's wedding. He also stated that it was Tamil superstar Vijay Sethupathi who helped him at the time of crisis by offering him Maharaja. For those unversed, in the film which released in 2024, Anurag played the role of antagonist.
At an event hosted by The Hindu, Anurag revealed that he didn't want to act despite being offered several South films. He also opened up about how he landed up getting Maharaja.
"After Imaikkaa Nodigal (2018 Tamil action-thriller), I was offered many South films but turned them down. Then, during the post-production of Kennedy, I kept running into Vijay Sethupathi at my neighbour’s house. I wasn’t keen at first (on doing Maharaja), but he helped me discover something in Kennedy. I even gave him a thank-you card in the film," the director said.
Anurag further recalled telling Vijay, "I need to get my daughter married next year, and I don’t think I can afford it." To this, Anurag said Vijay responded, "We’ll help you."
Anurag was first married to film editor Aarti Bajaj, with whom he has a daughter, Aaliyah, and they divorced in 2009. He later married actress Kalki Koechlin, and they divorced in 2015.
Aaliyah, who is a content creator and YouTuber, tied the knot with her longtime boyfriend, Shane Gregoire, in Mumbai, in December 2024. Her wedding festivities were attended by several Bollywood celebrities.
Meanwhile, in March 2025, Anurag announced that he has moved out of Mumbai and while he didn't disclose the new city, reports suggested that he has found his new home in Bengaluru.
He had also stated that he quit Bollywood, calling the Hindi film industry "too toxic". Anurag had also reportedly mentioned that he doesn't like how Bollywood filmmaker only chase box office numbers.
