History of Injection: We all have had an injection in the hospital at some time or another. Whether it is for the treatment of fever, for any serious illness, or during vaccination, an injection is an important part of our lives. But have you ever wondered how the syringe with which the medicine is injected into your body was invented? Do you know that once syringes were made from animal urine, and today the business of the same syringe has become worth billions of rupees.

What is a syringe?

A syringe is a medical device used to inject or withdraw a drug or liquid into the body. It consists of a cylindrical tube and a plunger, which draws and releases the drug. When a needle is attached to this tube, it takes the form of an injection.

How did it start?

The history of syringes began in the 5th century. In 1656, British physicist Christopher Wren first used a syringe-like technique to inject drugs into the veins of animals. At that time, syringes were made from animal urine bags and bone tubes. Gradually, scientists made it suitable for use on humans and by the end of the 11th century, syringes made of metal and glass began to be used.

How did the form of the syringe change?

  • Initially, syringes were boiled and reused
  • Then disposable plastic syringes were introduced, which reduced the risk of infection
  • Today, auto-disable syringes, prefilled syringes and safety syringes are being used, which are safe and convenient

How big is this market?

  • The medical device sector in India is growing rapidly and syringes are an important part of it
  • India's syringe market is estimated to be around ₹3,198 crore in 2023
  • Global syringe market is expected to reach around ₹55,230 crore in 2023

The history of syringes is as interesting as its evolution is inspiring. The journey from a device made from animal parts to today's ultramodern, safe and single-use syringes is a major achievement of medical science. Today it is not only saving people's lives, but is also making a significant contribution to the economy of the country and the world.
