Diseases spread rapidly during the rainy season, including eye diseases. Why do diseases like conjunctivitis and pimples spread more during the rains? Which precautions can be taken to keep the eyes healthy, know what the eye doctor has suggested.

Eye infection in rainy season: While the rainy season brings coolness and relief, the risk of many eye diseases also increases due to the increase in moisture, dirt and bacteria-virus at this time. Problems like conjunctivitis (eye infection), stye (pimple), dry eye and allergy become common in this season. The cause of these infections can be touching the eyes with dirty hands, rainwater entering the eyes or coming in contact with an infected person. Therefore, it is very important to take special care of the eyes in monsoon.
In monsoon, when the sun shines brightly after the rain, the humidity in the atmosphere increases. Due to increased humidity, a perfect environment is created for the viruses and bacteria to grow rapidly. Then, many eye-related problems spread rapidly in this season. In the rain, viruses and bacteria spread rapidly through air and water, due to which problems like irritation, redness, itching and swelling in the eyes are common.
Why do eye diseases spread in this season?
Dr. AK Grover of the Eye Department of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, says that a major reason for the spread of eye diseases during the rainy season is touching the eyes with dirty hands or coming in contact with infected water. Apart from this, bacteria grow rapidly in the eyes due to moisture and heat during monsoon. Many times, infections like conjunctivitis also spread due to coming in contact with an infected person in the office, school or public transport.
What are the eye diseases that occur during rains?1 Conjunctivitis
This is the most common infection that spreads rapidly in monsoon. It is also called eye flu. It is a viral or bacterial infection that affects the outer layer of the eye (conjunctiva).
Symptoms: Redness, watery or sticky eyes, itching and burning, sticky eyelids, especially in the morning.
2 Stye
A small swelling or pimple on the eye lids is called a stye. It is caused by bacteria and can spread by touching the eyes with dirty hands.
Symptoms: Painful pimple on the edge of eyelid, swelling and slight redness, heaviness in eyelids.
3 Dry Eye Syndrome
During the rainy season, the problem of dryness in the eyes can also increase due to continuous screen viewing and humidity.
Symptoms: Dryness, stinging or sand-like feeling in the eyes, burning sensation and eye fatigue.
4. Allergic Conjunctivitis
Some people get allergies due to pollen, dust or fungal infection during monsoon.
Symptoms: Intense itching in the eyes, redness, watering, frequent urge to rub the eyes.
Protect your eyes with these precautions-
– Do not touch your eyes with dirty hands. Wash your hands after coming from outside.
– Do not use anyone’s eye medicine, handkerchief or towel.
– If rainwater gets into your eyes, wash immediately with clean water.
– People who wear contact lenses should take special precautions during this season.
