When the thyroid gland produces sufficient or too much thyroid hormone, then thyroid disease occurs. In such a situation, let us know the reasons for which the thyroid increases and what to do to prevent it?
Main reason for thyroid enlargement
Thyroid hormones help the body's cells to use energy, control heart rate, and maintain body temperature. Thyroid disease occurs when the thyroid gland produces sufficient or too much thyroid hormone. Let us know the reasons for thyroid enlargement and when it increases, in which parts of the body does it cause pain, what to do to prevent it?
This is why thyroid increases:
Thyroid enlargement i.e. hyperthyroidism is a serious problem. In this condition, the level of thyroid hormone increases in the body. Due to the autoimmune disorder Graves' disease, the body's immune system starts targeting the thyroid gland, which increases the secretion of thyroid hormone. Its activity can also increase due to a lump in the thyroid gland. Due to inflammation in the thyroid gland, thyroiditis, the thyroid gland starts sending stored thyroid into the blood, which leads to hyperthyroidism. There is also a risk of increasing thyroid hormone due to excessive iodine intake. Some non-cancerous lumps formed in the pituitary gland also sometimes increase the secretion of thyroid. There is also a risk of increased thyroid secretion due to some medicines used to treat heart diseases.
Where does pain occur in the thyroid?
Problem of muscle pain and cramps: Increased thyroid levels in the body can cause muscle pain and cramps. This condition is called hyperthyroid myopathy.
Eye pain and swelling: There is also a risk of thyroid eye disease due to hyperthyroidism. This can cause eye pain, swelling and redness of the eyes.
Abdominal pain: Too much increase in thyroid levels can lead to a thyroid crisis, which causes symptoms like abdominal pain, fever and lack of alertness.
Joint pain: Increase in thyroid levels also increases the risk of arthritis.
There are many ways of treatment:
Anti-thyroid medication, radioactive iodine therapy, beta blockers and surgery (thyroidectomy) can be adopted to treat hyperthyroidism. Along with this, it can also be controlled to a great extent by reducing iodine in food, reducing caffeine intake, increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables and taking steps like adequate sleep and regular exercise.
