Manchester United fans made their feelings towards Alejandro Garnacho abundantly clear as he returned to Old Trafford with Chelsea. Despite staying on the bench as his new club was beaten 2-1 by Ruben Amorim’s side, United supporters took every opportunity to barrack the Argentine, who left for a cut-price £40million in the summer.
Garnacho was booed and jeered as he stepped off the Chelsea team bus and during the warm-up. The reaction was perhaps to be expected, as there were regular question marks about his attitude during his time at United.
Then, following the devastating Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, he blotted his copybook again with a stinging assessment of the club’s season, calling it “s***” and complaining about not starting the game. Garnacho's relationship with Amorim had already broken down by that point, with the club eager to offload him in the summer.
It was a sad state of affairs, given how highly he was rated by United at one point; his incredible overhead kick at Everton in 2023 springs to mind. He was once seen as one of the club’s young poster boys, but a series of misdemeanours and spats soured his relationship with both the club and its fanbase to the point of no return.
Goaded outside Old TraffordGarnacho once hit back at a fan with a five-word reply after being goaded outside Old Trafford. As he signed autographs and posed for pictures ahead of a Europa League tie against POAK last November, one forthright individual gave the attacker a piece of his mind.

They said: “Garnacho, you've got to pass better today, yeah, please? Pass better, score a goal and work on your first touch as well, yeah?”
To his credit, Garnacho kept his cool, replying: “Why you not playing, man?” He then made his way to the dressing room.
Another altercation with a fanFollowing his Europa League final outburst, there was still time for Garnacho to make the headlines for the wrong reasons prior to his move to Chelsea. He joined United on their post-season tour to Asia, only to be caught on camera allegedly pushing a supporter while in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.
The video, first posted on TikTok, shows Garnacho, wearing sunglasses and a gold chain, ignoring the fan as he asks if he prefers Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Bro, you pushed me,” the supporter then claimed as Garnacho walked off. From the footage, it is unclear if Garnacho actually shoved the individual. But again, it summed up how his relationship with fans had deteriorated during his final days at United.
In June, Garnacho upset fans further by donning an Aston Villa shirt with ‘Rashford 9’ on the back in honour of his fellow United ‘bomb squad’ member. Garnacho, who was still a United player at the time, decided to upload the shot to his Instagram page.
Rashford, prior to his loan move to Barcelona, commented "My brother" on the post and accompanied it with a love heart emoji. However, it didn’t go down so well with United supporters, who had grown tired of his antics and perceived lack of respect for his employers.
Both stars ended up getting their desired moves away in the summer window, although Rashford perhaps still holds more respect from the Stretford End given his far longer association with the club.
Garnacho didn’t read the room as he penned his farewell message to United. He wrote: “After an unforgettable five years, this special chapter in my life now comes to a close.
“We have created moments that will stay with me forever, and I’m very grateful for this. To the coaches, staff, and my team-mates, thank you for believing in me.
“Every time I wore the badge, I gave everything I had. I leave proud of what we achieved together and excited for what’s to come.
“Wishing the club nothing but success for the future, while I look forward to giving my all in the next chapter of my career.”
It’s fair to say the goodwill wasn't reciprocated by fans, with some cuttingly accusing him of using AI to write the message. One simply said: “Betrayal.”
A second added: “Will miss the player. Not the attitude.“ A third suggested: "AI wrote this." Another advised: “All the best, young man. Stop being arrogant, play football [and] you will hit your potential.”
Following a lack of game time following his move, Garnacho could be given a start by Enzo Maresca when Chelsea visit Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
