Footballer, 15, dies in ambulance after collapsing on pitch during match

A 15-year-old footballer has died in Mexico after collapsing on the pitch. Atziri Ledif Galeana Valencia was attended to by medics but sadly died in the ambulance on her way to hospital.

Valencia was in action for Chivas against Toriz in the final of a tournament on Saturday when she collapsed, reportedly with heatstroke. She was given CPR and oxygen as well as cold compresses to cool her down.

After being rushed to a nearby hospital, she was sadly pronounced dead on arrival. The match and tournament were suspended in the wake of the incident, while scheduled games on Sunday were also cancelled.

Mexico is currently in the midst of a , with the temperature at the match around 34 degrees celsius. The Michoacan State Prosecutor’s Office are investigating Valencia's death to ascertain as to whether health and safety protocols were correctly followed.

A spokesperson for Chivas said in a statement: "The Chivas family is going through its hardest moment as we say goodbye to our beloved Atziri Galeana.

"You will live on in our hearts - you left an unforgettable mark on your teammates, coaching staff, supporters, and the entire club. Until we meet again to play an even more beautiful final, rest in peace, champion.
