Children put coins, sharp objects, buttons or any small object in their mouth and many adults also make this mistake. Obviously, if any such object gets stuck in the throat, it can cause suffocation and even death. If the object is very small and enters the stomach, sometimes it passes out in the stool but sometimes the object gets stuck inside the throat or gets stuck in the intestines. In such a condition, medical emergency is needed the most and quickly. You should know what should be done to remove such an object stuck in the throat immediately.
What things can get stuck in your throat?
- Children tend to choke on things like coins, small sharp objects such as toy parts, game parts, small buttons, rings, some earrings, paper clips, teeth, button batteries, magnets, needles, pins, pushpins, nails, screws, toothpicks, some earrings, bottle caps, aluminium pull tabs, fish bones etc. Sometimes large pieces of food, especially meat, can get stuck while passing through the stomach. This problem mostly occurs in adults.
Honey can be helpful
- If the child is older than one year and has swallowed something, giving honey at home can be helpful. In such a condition, give him 2 teaspoons of honey every 10 minutes and try to reach the hospital as soon as possible.
- When should you worry
- Doctors are saying that there is a greater risk of objects of one inch i.e. 25 mm or larger getting stuck in the throat, such as a 24 mm coin. Such large objects can get stuck in the food pipe.
Doctor's advice for small, smooth and safe accessories
- If you swallow something that is very small and smooth and does not pose much danger, then the doctor advises that it has gone into the stomach and will come out on its own. If the thing does not come out in the stool within 3 days, then get an X-ray done.
- Get an X-ray
- This will tell if the swallowed object is still in the stomach or not. In case of a harmless object, X-ray can be done even after 24 hours, because there is a higher chance of it reaching the stomach after a night's sleep.
What to do if you swallow a large object
- In such a condition, call an emergency. Keep in mind that if you are having trouble breathing, there is a loud, rough sound while breathing, a whistling sound while exhaling, then understand that there is a danger to life. In such a case, call a doctor immediately or get treatm
- What to do if food gets stuck in your throat
- Some research suggests that drinking carbonated drinks may help dislodge food stuck in the throat or esophagus. Medications such as Alka-Seltzer may also help dislodge trapped food. A few large sips of water may help push the food down
