Greece bombing horror as woman killed in blast

A woman in Greece died on May 3 after a bomb exploded in her hands. The woman, 38, who is yet to be named, was killed in the blast in the popular city of Thessaloniki.

Police and forensics are investigating amid reports that the woman was attempting to place the bomb near a cash machine at a bank in the country's second-most populous city.

Several shopfronts were damaged in the explosion on Saturday morning. The woman was said to be known to authorities and had been involved in several robberies.

Authorities added that they are investigating her possible ties to extreme leftist organisations. The woman was taken to hospital with severe hand injuries but later died, according to the BBC.

Footage of the scene shows forensic investigators in white overalls scraping the scene for evidence.

According to local outlet Ekathimerini, the woman involved in a group that had sent a parcel bomb to the Thessaloniki Court of Appeal in February 2024. Greek counter-terrorism police continue to investigate that incident.

This is not the first major blast in Greece this year. In April there was an explosion in Athens, the capital, after a bomb went off outside the Hellenic Train offices.

Footage of the incident showed the awful moment the explosion tore through a padlocked backpack dropped outside the building.

A huge flash was captured in CCTV clips after the bomb detonated. There were no fatalities or injuries reported.
