A car has driven into fans celebrating the club's Premier League title win in the city centre. A vehicle ploughed into a crowd of supporters as they lined the streets to cheer players taking part in an open-top bus parade. Merseyside Police say that a 53-year-old British man from Liverpool has been arrested following a road traffic collision on Water Street, situated near the popular shopping destination The Strand. They have asked people not to speculate or share videos of the incident on social media.
Comedian John Bishop was in attendance at the parade held on Monday and has since issued a statement. Taking to Instagram, he penned: "I was at the parade today with my dad and like everyone else I am shocked and heartbroken about the events at the end of the Liverpool parade."
He continued: "My heart goes out to all those affected. Our anthem could not be more appropriate You'll Never Walk Alone."
John, 58, had attended the parade along with his dad and shared a heartwarming photo of them together before the incident.
Taking to Instagram, he captioned the post: "Sometimes you find yourself looking out of the window with your Dad and things just make sense . Grateful to be doing this #YNWA."
The father and son duo had a good view as they watched swarms of Liverpool fans take to the streets.
Police cars, ambulances, fire engines and an air ambulance are all at the scene, with dozens of emergency service crew. A car believed to have been involved has been covered for forensics.
A Merseyside Police statement said: "We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight's incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre. We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.
"We would ask people not to share distressing content online but to send the footage or information directly to us @MerPolCC or pass on information by calling 101 quoting log 784. Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
