A YouTuber has claimed to have found the cheapest city in the world, and it is part of a beautiful country that is extremely popular with Brits.
Bangkok is the most populous city of Thailand, being home to more than 10 million people (13% of Thailand's population). The megacity spans 1,568.7 square kilometres (605.7 sq mi) in the Chao Phraya River delta, central Thailand.
The capital of Thailand welcomes between 700,000 to 900,000 British tourists each year. Thailand is consistently hailed as one of the most affordable places in the world, earning its name on numerous rankings. Many cite the country's low cost of living as the biggest draw for Brits, but there are several reasons why people travel to Bangkok.
Bangkok is renowned for its vibrant street life, cultural landmarks, and its famous red-light districts. Alongside this, its warm climate draws in people from all over the world.
In the city, travel YouTuber Ben Morris said: "This is one of the cheapest cities in the world."
He went on to show how much he could do in the city for 24 hours, while spending less than £100, including accommodation, food and activities.
By the end of the video, Morris was left with change and hadn't spent the full amount, despite living to the fullest, demonstrating how affordable the city really is.
On a Reddit thread titled "What do you think is the biggest reason Thailand is such a popular tourist destination across the world?", users listed their reasons as to why people love the country so much.
One person said: "The climate, even despite the rainy season, the cultural sights (temples,...), the nature from mountains to beautiful beaches, still affordable for most tourists, the friendly people, bustling international cities (mainly Bangkok), a safe destination and of course the food. All of that with decent infrastructure."
Another cited value is the biggest pull factor for Thailand. They added: "There are places with better beaches, nicer nature, better infrastructure, notably better quality of life. But Thailand has for decades now given you a nice-enough combination of these, for much less. It also helped a lot in making people ignore the shortcomings and risks/costs that you need to accept to save on an average family vacation trip, like pollution, road deaths, struggling infrastructure, instability, language and cultural differences, legal and political risks, among others.
"Thailand is a nice country with great people, but the value for money truly is the biggest reason, without which Thailand wouldn't be such a popular tourist destination across the world. Thai tourism, which is a key pillar of the Thai economy, is extremely sensitive to the strength of the Thai baht relative to the other currencies, as evident in its current rise, leading to a sharp drop in tourist spending in Thailand."
