In-demand Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has dropped a hint about his future after his side clinched a domestic double. The Swedish forward, who is on Arsenal's radar, played a pivotal role as Sporting secured the Portuguese Cup with a dramatic win over Benfica.
Gyokeres was the hero for Sporting, netting a last-gasp penalty to take the game into extra time, where they triumphed 3-1 thanks to further strikes from Conrad Harder and Francisco Trincao. His equaliser capped off an incredible season that saw him bag 53 goals and provide 13 assists across 51 appearances.
Despite the celebrations, plenty of focus after the final whistle was on Gyokeres' future, and he gave a teasing response when pressed about his future and the links to Arsenal. "Let us see," he remarked.
"It's hard for me to say, because yeah it is football and you never know what's going to happen in the summer. So for me to say anything else than that is impossible."
When probed specifically about the Gunners, Gyokeres remained coy, saying: "I don't know, I just focus on this. I've tried to focus on the last games because it's so important and I don't want to think about anything else. So yeah, if anything is true, let's see in the summer."
Arsenal are reportedly ready to splash the cash on Gyokeres, with a £60million price tag and wages over £200,000-a-week. The Gunners, who have finished second in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons, are eager to bolster their attacking options after injuries to key players like Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz hampered their title challenge.
Sporting and the Swedish international are set to discuss his future now that the season has concluded, with Arsenal believed to be leading the race for his signature.
With new sporting director Andrea Berta at the helm, Arsenal have identified Gyokeres as their top target, placing him above RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko on their wish list.
Mikel Arteta has emphasised the need for a prolific striker to elevate Arsenal's game, stating before the final match against Southampton: "If you want to win major trophies, you have to be the best in the market, no? What is clear with the amount of injuries that we had in the front line is that we need a goal threat and we need firepower.
"Understanding that the context can change tomorrow, we cannot rely just on the numbers that we had before. We have to add goals, creativity, and we have to add numbers, and that will be in different positions."
