At least four persons were confirmed to have been killed in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal and Kumaon regions on Friday in heavy rain-related incidents, The Telegraph reported. Several persons were missing.
A cloudburst triggered landslides and flash floods, which washed away homes, damaged roads and killed cattle in the Chamoli, Bageshwar, Rudraprayag and Tehri districts, The New Indian Express reported.
Two persons had died each in Chamoli’s Mopata village, Bageshwar’s Simoti and Rudraprayag’s Badeth Dungar Tok, and one in Tehri’s Gewal, The Telegraph reported. Only the administrations in Chamoli and Bageshwar had confirmed deaths by Friday evening, the newspaper reported.
Schools in Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Haridwar and Pithoragarh districts remained closed on Friday due to the heavy rainfall.
Chamoli Police had on Friday urged residents living along the riverbanks to move to safe locations immediately.
The state has been witnessing incessant rainfall in recent weeks. On August 23, at least two persons went missing in Chamoli after floods triggered by overnight rainfall.
