Guwahati: Assam cabinet expressed its appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sanctioning the northeast's first high-speed controlled-access corridor connecting Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya to Panchgram in Assam.

The cabinet highlighted that this point-to-point highway would reduce the journey duration between Guwahati and Silchar in Cachar from 12 hours to five hours.

The state cabinet also acknowledged union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman for their backing of the initiative.

Thermal Power

The cabinet endorsed the Assam Thermal Power Generation Promotion Policy 2025, aiming to achieve energy independence for the state by 2035.

"This decision will promote private sector participation in thermal power generation and develop 2,000MW thermal power by 2030 and 5,00 MW by 2035," CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said during Tuesday's post-cabinet meeting briefing.

Assam Power Development Corporation Limited (APDCL) will function as the nodal agency implementing this policy, featuring a dedicated single-window clearance system.

Power Subsidy

The cabinet sanctioned a targeted subsidy of Rs 300 crore and tariff subsidy of Rs 200 crore to APDCL to provide consumer relief and prevent retail tariff increases during FY 2025-26.

It also authorised Rs 244 crore for land acquisition to enhance and renovate the 220 KV Grid substation of Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited.

Service Rules

The cabinet approved modifications to the Assam Sericulture Technical (Gazetted) Service Rules, 2013, enabling 100% direct recruitment of extension officers from candidates possessing minimum B.Sc in Sericulture from recognised institutes.
