KOTA: A 20-year-old videographer was shot dead in Dug town of Jhalawar district Thursday night in what appears to be the fallout of a road rage incident, triggering violent protests. The incident led to suspension of internet services and heavy deployment of police forces in the town. One suspect was arrested Friday while police said the hunt for the other assailants was on.

Shambhu Singh, the victim, was filming a wedding ceremony at Meghwal Mohalla when he was confronted by the assailants. Following a brief verbal altercation, one of the attackers shot Singh, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Jhalawar SP Richa Tomar said Shambhu Singh, son of Shankar Singh from Lasudiya village, was shot at when he was filming a wedding ceremony with his friend Deepak Mehar, a resident of Gangdhar. They were at their relative Prakash Mehar's house in Dug town when, around 5:15 pm, a few men arrived in a blue Swift Dzire car with registration number RJ 17 CB 7107 and opened fire on Shambhu Singh, killing him on the spot.

DSP Jai Prakash Atal said the murder was the fallout of an earlier incident, in which Singh's vehicle had accidentally struck the assailants' car. The assailants tracked Singh to the wedding venue and attacked him, he added.

The murder sparked immediate unrest in the area, with angry locals setting fire to several market stalls and engaging in stone-pelting. The violence resulted in several police personnel receiving injuries. The SHO of Raipur police station was critically injured.

Jhalawar police arrested a suspect, 18-year-old Rehan, Friday and launched a search for the main accused. Raids were conducted at several locations to arrest the main accused, identified as Sohail Khan, 27. A reward of Rs 25,000 was also announced for information leading to his arrest, said the SP.

The victim's family initially refused to allow a post-mortem Friday and demanded compensation. The situation was resolved after local MLA Kaluram Meghwal and Jhalawar collector Ajay Singh Rathore intervened, promising a compensation package of Rs 40 lakh, including Rs 5 lakh from state govt and the remainder from public contribution, and a contractual job for Singh's younger brother.

Internet services remained suspended in Dug, Bhawanimandi and Pedawa sub-divisions till Saturday as a precautionary measure. Heavy police presence continues in the area, though the situation is said to be under control.
