One week, two World Cups, three gold medals. Suruchi Singh is living a dream. Late on Tuesday, the 18-yearold from Jhajjar, Haryana, clinched her second individual gold medal in women’s 10m air pistol event in the World Cup.
Only a week earlier, she had won gold in her debut World Cup appearance in the Buenos Aires edition. Add to that the bronze she won with Saurabh Chaudhary in 10m air pistol mixed event in Buenos Aires. On Wednesday, the pair outdid their Argentina finish with a fine gold in the 10m air pistol mixed event.

It would prove Suruchi’s third World Cup gold. Duelling with the Chinese pair of Kai Hu and Qianxun Yao in the gold medal match, the Indian pair found itself down 4-8, but then shifted gears to win 17-9.
The other Indian pair of Manu Bhaker and Ravinder Singh lost their bronze medal match to their Chinese rivals Yifan Zhang and Qianke Ma 6-16. Suruchi was only riding her fine form.
In Buenos Aires, she had outshot three Chinese, In Lima, on Tuesday, Suruchi not only beat two Chinese but also her Indian compatriot Manu Bhakar to the top spot. Manu, the double medallist at Paris Olympics, also displayed high skills to win silver. The bronze went to China’s Qianxun Yao.

Suruchi shot 243.6, while Manu scored 242.3 for the second spot. Yao shot 219.5. “The win at Buenos Aires added to my confidence. I was sure of winning gold today (Tuesday) as I was shooting well and I had been doing well in training too,” Suruchi said on Tuesday.
If shooting with Manu put her under any pressure, Suruchi said, “I don’t get bothered about my opponents, be it Manu or the Chinese shooters. I don’t think about them at all. I have only one job, to focus on my shooting, and I do that.” The start of the final was dominated by two Chinese shooters, Yao and Yufei Meng. Suruchi was placed third after the first 10 shots, but gained the lead with two good shots – 10.4 and 10.6 – while Manu stayed fourth.
