New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday appointed Justices N V Anjaria , Vijay Bishnoi and Atil S Chandurkar as judges of the Supreme Court within three days of the SC's five-judge collegium led by CJI B R Gavai recommending their names.
CJI Gavai will administer the oath of office to the three judges in the SC on Friday. On May 26, the collegium, also comprising Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, J K Maheshwari and B V Nagarathna, had recommended to the Union govt to appoint Karnataka HC Chief Justice Anjaria (parent HC Gujarat), Gauhati HC CJ Bishnoi (parent HC Rajasthan) and Bombay HC's Justice Chandurkar as SC judges.
The Govt took just two days to clear their names and sent it to the President to issue their warrants of appointment within three days, which would figure as one of the fastest appointments of SC judges. Their appointments will see the SC reach its full strength of 34 judges, including the CJI. H
However, one vacancy will arise on the retirement of Justice Bela M Trivedi on June 9.
Justices Anjaria and Chandurkar will have a little less than five years each in the SC, while Justice Bishnoi will have less than four years. Justice Anjaria was appointed as a judge of the Gujarat High Court on November 21, 2011, and took oath as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court on February 25, 2024.
