Indian Stock Market Opens Weak: Sensex, Nifty Slip Amid Early Sell-Off Pressure

New Delhi, April 25, 2025 — Domestic stock markets started on a cautious note on Thursday with both benchmark indices—Sensex and Nifty—trading in the red during early morning deals. After a marginally positive opening, both indices saw a brief uptick supported by initial buying. However, within 10 minutes of the opening bell, heavy selling pressure dragged the markets lower.

Sensex Drops Over 600 Points After Early Gains

The BSE Sensex opened slightly higher at 79,830.15, gaining 28.72 points, and soon surged to an intraday high of 80,130.66. But the rally was short-lived, as investors opted to book profits. By 10 AM, the Sensex had tumbled 640.46 points, or 0.80%, to trade at 79,160.97.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty began the day with a 42.30-point rise, opening at 24,289, and climbed to 24,365.45. However, the benchmark index could not sustain the gains and slipped into the red, falling by 207.35 points, or 0.86%, to trade at 24,039.35 at 10 AM.

Mixed Performance Across Key Stocks

At the time of reporting, out of 2,061 actively traded stocks on the BSE, only 330 were advancing, while 1,731 stocks were in the red. Among Sensex constituents, only four stocks, including SBI Life Insurance, TCS, HCL Technologies, Reliance Industries, and JSW Steel, were trading in the green with gains ranging between 0.10% and 4.99%.

On the flip side, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finance, Trent Ltd, Bajaj Finserv, and Tech Mahindra led the losers’ pack, with losses ranging from 0.98% to 3.54%.

In terms of index composition, 26 of 30 Sensex stocks were trading lower, while 15 of 50 Nifty stocks were in the green, and 35 in the red.

Previous Session Recap

On the previous trading day (April 24), the Sensex closed down by 315.06 points (0.39%) at 79,801.43, and the Nifty ended 82.25 points (0.34%) lower at 24,246.70. This indicates that the bearish trend has extended into Thursday’s session as well.

With global uncertainties and domestic earnings season in full swing, market participants are expected to remain cautious in the near term.
