New Delhi, April 20, 2025 — Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has been fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during Match 35 of the TATA IPL 2025 against Delhi Capitals, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

According to an official release from the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gill was penalized under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over rate offenses. Since it was Gujarat Titans’ first such offense of the season, the standard fine of ₹12 lakh was imposed on the team’s captain.

Shubman Gill Penalized Despite Victory

The match ended in a convincing seven-wicket win for Gujarat Titans. However, the slow over rate issue during the Delhi Capitals’ innings brought disciplinary attention post-match.

In the game, Delhi Capitals posted 203/8 in their 20 overs. Gujarat Titans chased down the target in 19.2 overs, scoring 204/3, with Jos Buttler leading the charge with a match-winning unbeaten 97 off 54 balls, including 11 fours and 4 sixes.

IPL’s Stance on Over Rate

The IPL has taken a strict stance on slow over rates in recent seasons to ensure matches are completed on time and maintain broadcast schedules. Team captains are held responsible for the fielding side’s pace of play. Repeated offenses may lead to:

  • Higher fines

  • Match suspensions for the captain

  • Fines for other playing members

Gill’s fine serves as a reminder to all franchises to stay within the stipulated time limits for each inning.
