Srinagar, May 2 In yet another breach of the ceasefire agreement, Pakistani forces opened unprovoked fire on multiple locations along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir on the night of May 1–2. The latest incidents were reported from Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Nowshera, and Akhnoor, according to a senior Indian Army official.
Ceasefire Violations Escalate Post-Pahalgam Terror AttackThe firing marks a continuation of repeated ceasefire violations following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. Since then, the Pakistan Army has been resorting to provocative actions along both LoC and IB, despite the ceasefire understanding in place since February 2021.
Indian troops gave a measured and appropriate response to the latest round of firing, which reportedly involved small arms. The initial exchange began in Kupwara and Baramulla and soon expanded to Poonch, Akhnoor, Sunderbani, and Nowshera sectors.
Firing Reported Along LoC and IBIn addition to LoC sectors, Pakistani forces also opened fire in the Pargwal sector along the International Border in Jammu district, marking the first reported firing on the IB in over a week. The incidents also continued from April 29 to May 1, involving unprovoked firing in Uri, Akhnoor, Nowshera, and Sunderbani.
The escalation is seen as a deliberate attempt to provoke Indian forces and destabilize the region. The Indian Army has responded in a disciplined and retaliatory manner, ensuring no civilian casualties while maintaining operational readiness.
Increased Security and Civilian AdvisoryIn response to the escalating cross-border hostilities, Indian security agencies have heightened vigilance along sensitive sectors. Civilians in the border areas have been advised to remain in safe zones and avoid exposure to potential shelling or firing.
Security arrangements in vulnerable villages have been reinforced, and military surveillance has been intensified to monitor any movement from across the border. The Ministry of Defence and Army officials are closely monitoring the situation.
This flare-up comes amid India’s recent move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam attack, signaling deteriorating diplomatic ties between the two countries.
